Protect Your Skin From The Sun- Plants Produce a Natural "Sunscreen" That Shields Them From Sun Damage

You probably already know SPF is an all-season essential. Ultraviolet exposure increases your risk of skin cancer, sun damage and aging, which has been proven by many scientific studies. UV exposure has been proven to cause what scientists call photoaging, a gradual process of skin deterioration with both aesthetic effects (wrinkles, aging spots, skin looseness) and functional impacts (immune system repression, DNA mutation). The market is loaded with sunscreen products, but not all sunscreens are created equal. So how do you know which formulas to trust and which are a bust?

In 2019 and 2020, FDA scientists conducted two phases of clinical studies. These studies showed that the body was able to absorb the sunscreen applied to the skin. You can read more about this study here.

When people say that the skin is the largest organ of the human body, it means that it is its own organ, capable of absorbing almost everything applied to it. Even though the skin provides a natural barrier to stop toxic compounds from penetrating the body, some chemicals (Oxybenzone, Octocrylene, octocrylene) have been shown to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. These chemicals have even been found in human breast milk…….

All in all, this goes to show that we should skip the chemicals and slather on non-toxic sunscreen instead of other toxins from cosmetics products. Non-toxic, organic products are so important to inner health, not just the health of your skin.

A number of studies indicate that several herb extracts could protect against sunburn and other damage from UV light without the harmful effects of toxic chemicals.

8 Herbs That Can Save Your Skin

8. Golden serpent fern (known to scientists as Phlebodium aureum) is the herb for which the most evidence has been amassed. It is also called calaguala. Golden serpent fern is used in the treatment of some inflammatory diseases, and research indicates that it might be useful for sun protection in the general population as well.

In one study, nine participants took an oral dose of the herb extract and were then exposed to UV light. Twenty-four hours later, they exhibited significantly less sunburn than the control group, and when their skin cells were examined under a microscope, the researchers saw less inflammation and damage. In another experiment, the amount of UV exposure needed to trigger sunburn was nearly three times higher for people who had been given the extract, as compared with others that had been given a placebo. Scientists speculate that antioxidant compounds in the herb—including phenolic and hydroxycinnamic acids—may protect skin cells at the molecular level.

Results from another similar study show that these herbs have the same effects on skin UV protection.

7. Green Tea   Protecting your skin from the dangerous rays of the sun can prevent future skin damage and even skin cancer. When used as an ointment, green tea is a very effective natural sunscreen. It should be applied at least 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun. Green tea also has high levels of catechins, which work as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. It can even prevent aging skin, by thickening the epidermis.

6. Aloe vera

Aloe vera has been referred to as the “plant of immortality” by the ancient Egyptians and it has been used for centuries to treat blemishes on the skin, including cuts, scratches, acne, and wrinkles. As an anti-inflammatory, Aloe vera helps to speed up the healing process and even rehydrates the skin when used. Leaves from the Aloe vera plant can be split open and applied directly to the skin, but this herb is also sold as ointments, gels, powders, and juices.

5.Calendula

(Calendula officinalis)

vulnerary, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, antiviral, antifungal, lymphatic stimulant, and immune supporter,

External Use: Calendula can be used as a wash, compress, lotion, essential oil, cream, or ointment for most skin conditions, especially slow-healing wounds, bruises, cuts, burns including sunburn, eczema, fungal infections, cracked or sore nipples, oily skin or varicose veins.

Calendula can support already healthy skin or aid skin that has been damaged. You can use calendula to maintain healthy skin and to improve elasticity and hydration. Calendula can also be used to promote skin health after the skin has been severely damaged.

4. Ginseng leaf

Ginseng leaf is rich in total phenolic compounds and has a higher content of certain ginsenosides, which provide photoprotective effects against UVB-induced skin damage

3. Arctium lappa (Burdock)

Therapeutic Actions: Its primary use is as an alterative, which means it acts as a blood cleanser, when taken internally, and helps the body attain a better state of wellness. It is very useful for a wide range of conditions, especially for skin such as acne, eczema, boils, ulcers, psoriasis, and dry scaly skin. As it has a purifying effect, it is great for digestive disturbances, rheumatic and urinary conditions, and also has antibiotic properties. It helps the body purify itself and eliminate toxins.

The root is primarily used for medicinal purposes. For external conditions use a poultice or wash. The leaves can be used as a digestive tonic infusion or as a poultice.

2. Turmeric

This beneficial herb has been used throughout India for thousands of years and has been known to help create beautiful skin. It works as both an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. This powerful combination helps to keep the skin clear and prevents blemishes. Its high levels of curcumin are believed to help fight against melanoma.

1. Hawthorn Berry

Studies have demonstrated the powerful effects that epicatechins and proanthocyanidins have on photoprotection and the structure and function of your skin. One study26 evaluated the effect hawthorn extract has on skin aging triggered by UVB light that increases matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production and the degradation of collagen.

This combination of damage from UVB light leads to the formation of wrinkles. Using an animal model, the researchers found treatments reversed epidermal thickening and damage caused by UVB light, which “suppressed MMP expression and stimulated the production of type I procollagen.”27 This suggested to the researchers that hawthorn extract may help “prevent UVB radiation-induced skin photoaging.”28

Many of these herbs are already used in a large number of beauty products on the market. However, each herb, individually, does a fine job on its own at saving your skin. While each person will react to these herbs differently, you will start to notice an improvement in the look of your skin over just a short time. When applying a drop to the skin, it is always suggested to test the products on a small patch of skin first, to check for allergies.
